Chapter Seven

When I got up the next morning, Jake was already there. He’d been spending more and more time at the house, too. It was good to see him and Damen picking right back up where they left off. They were both shoveling down forkfuls of Troian’s pancakes.

“Good morning,” I said, yawning, and still wiping sleep out of my eyes. Even the shower hadn’t woken me up enough. I’d stayed up late thinking Troian would come talk to me after he got in from Stonehenge, but I was mistaken.

Without a word, Troian got up and made me a plate of pancakes and set it down in front of my usual spot at the table. “Thank you,” I said.

“Welcome.”

Jake eyed the both of us.

“We need to have a meeting after breakfast. Or whatever it is you guys do here to pass along information,” Troian said.

“I thought you didn’t get anything good,” Damen said.

Troian clenched his fork a little tighter. Since I’d heard him yell at his sister yesterday, I’d say he excelled at keeping his anger in check most of the time. Something had pissed him off last night and I wasn’t convinced that it wasn’t me. “It’s worth talking over,” I said, trying to help.

Damen shrugged.

Jake said, “Cool. My whole morning is free.” He beamed from ear-to-ear. He reminded me of his sixteen-year-old self. Damen and him were always bright-eyed and gung ho. Maybe I’d ask Jake about Damen’s personality change when I got him alone. It made me nervous.

I was the last to finish breakfast. They were all waiting for me in the living room when I walked in. They all just stared at each other awkwardly. Troian didn’t look my way at all.

I rolled my eyes and barreled forward. “Jake, Green Eyes and I went to Stonehenge yesterday to meet with his sister and the rest of the Ley Line Guardians.”

“Better you than me,” he said.

He had not been the biggest Barbara fan by a long shot. Troian smirked at his response.

“Anyway,” I said. “They said they saw Hawthorn after he left Salem. He went by the place they were held captive at and even tortured one of them.”

Damen sat up straighter. “Tortured?”

“Yep. Turner says our ex-mayor sank a knife into him and got a hell of a lot of joy from it.”

“Bastard,” Damen said, shaking his head.

“I, for one, knew I never liked the guy.”

“That’s because he didn’t put up with your shit,” Damen said.

“Not true. It’s because he didn’t like putting up with my shit only because I have breasts.”

My brother’s face scrunched up. “Ugh. Can we not bring that up?”

“I’m just sayin’”

Troian was trying hard not to laugh. Jake looked like he wasn’t going to touch this conversation with a hundred-foot pole.

“Moving on,” Damen said, rolling his hand in the air.

“The Stonehenge guardians want to help find him. They feel they owe him something.” Troian smirked evilly.

Damen opened his mouth to speak, but I interrupted. “I told them they couldn’t kill him until after he testified against Etau.
